Coconut Processing Training at Axel Integrated Farm Empowers 32 Samar Farmers
In late July 2024, Axel Integrated Farm became a hub of learning as 32 farmers from Talalora, Samar gathered for a hands-on training in coconut sap processing.
The Training Program
The Training on Production of Coconut Products and its By-products, held from July 29-31, 2024 at Axel Integrated Farm, Brgy. Poblacion 1, Talalora, Samar, was conducted by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) Eastern Visayas under the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP). The program aimed to enhance the marketability of coconut food products and by-products, ultimately boosting the Philippine coconut industry’s competitiveness.
Participants learned to process coconut sap into high-value products including virgin coconut oil (VCO), coconut aminos, coconut nectar, coconut balsamic, and coconut vinegar. The training also covered product packaging and marketing strategies to help farmers create viable livelihood enterprises.
Axel Farm’s Role
Axel Integrated Farm provided the venue and shared its expertise in coconut sap processing. As a producer of Cocestra (coconut balsamic), Sukang Waray (traditional coconut vinegar), Sinamak (spiced coconut vinegar), Coconut Aminos, and Sapura (coconut nectar beverage), the farm demonstrated practical techniques that participants could replicate in their own communities.
Impact on Samar Farmers
The training empowered 32 farmer-processors and coconut toppers with new skills that can increase their income and create job opportunities. By learning to transform raw coconut sap into diverse products, farmers can add value to their harvests and access wider markets.
Mr. Samuel Mejica, a participant, shared: “This is our first time to be visited and trained by the ATI. The group is very grateful because not only did we learn about the processing of coconut sap, but also we learned about the many programs by the government for the coconut farmers. As the main source of our income, this good news brought us hope that soon our lives will be elevated. Thank you for the opportunity and we are hoping that you come back for more training.”
